Rishi Kapoor belonged to a family of a legendary grandfather, two superstar uncles, a father known as ‘the great showman’, and two brothers who also acted in films.
Few young actors have such a strong family background and less than a few manage to create an image for themselves. Rishi Kapoor was quite successful in making his own image.
Rishi Kapoor was born on September 4, 1952 in Mumbai to Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor. He got a start in movie a bit earlier than others mainly because he was born into a family of film-makers. He starred in Mera Naam Joker in 1970 when he was 18 years old and here he played his father’s role as a young boy. Though the move failed to gain success in box office, it was still evident enough that Rishi Kapoor has some potential. After three years, Rishi Kapoor was the main hero of Bobby (1973) and the film brought a huge success to his father who produced the movie as well as to Rishi Kapoor himself who won Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in the movie.
Rishi Kapoor acted in a number of movies afterwards. He played role of a musician who witnesses a murder in Rafoo Chakkar (1975) and the movie also starred his future wife Neetu Singh. Both were seen together in Khel Khel Mein (1975) during the same year. Rishi Kapoor worked with major starts in 70s, such as Amitabh Bachchan in Kabhi Kabhie (1976) where he played as a son of Shashi Kapoor. In 1977, his biggest hits were Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin and Amar Akbar Anthony.
Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh in 1980.
Subhash Ghai’s musical bonanza named Karz was proven to be the biggest hit for Rishi Kapoor, which was released in 1980. In 1985, he paired with Dimple Kapadia in Saagar which was yet another hit. In 1986, he acted in Nagina with Sridevi which was a major hit. In 1989 his one of the biggest hit of his career was released. called Chandni where he starred with Sridevi.
Henna (1991) was the last movie which his father Raj Kapoor made with him. Raj Kapoor died while he was making the movie and it was completed by his elder brother Randhir Kapoor. In 1992, Rishi Kapoor’s film Deewana with Shahrukh Khan and Divya Bharathi, and Bol Radha Bol with Juhi Chawla came. Both were major hits.
Then a time came when he realized that he can no longer act as a lover boy and decided to give up such roles. He then directed and co-produced Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1997 which starred Aishwarya Rai and Akshaye Khanna which was a hit.
Rishi Kapoor continued to play supporting roles in movies such as Raju Chacha (2000), Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi (2001), Hum Tum (2004), Fanaa (2006), Do Dooni Chaar (2010), 102 Not Out (2018) and others.
In 2019, his two films were released Jhootha Kahin Ka and The Body.
On 30 April 2020, he died because of complications of bone marrow cancer. He was survived by his wife Neetu Singh and two children named Ranbir and Ridhima. Ranbir Kapoor was launched as an actor in 2007 with Saawariya and he has been a successful actor so far.
