Dilip Kumar, the tragedy king of Hindi cinema was born in Peshawar, British India.. His real name is Yousuf Khan. He used to run a restaurant before becoming an actor. His first film was Jwar Bhata (1944) which wasn’t appreciated. His first hit film was Jugnu (1947). He became star after working in Andaz (1949) with Raj Kapoor. After his few huge hits like Jogan (1949), Arzoo (1950), Deedar (1951), Daag (1952), Aan (1952), Insaaniyat (1955), Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Madhumati (1958), Kohinoor (1960) he was declared as tragedy king. In 1960 he worked in Taj Mahal, which was a historical film and huge hit.
He was influenced by American actor Paul Muni (1895 – 1967).
In 1961 he become brother by making Ganga Jumna (1961), in which his real brother was starred, That was a successful film but he didn’t made any other after that.
Some of his last hits were Leader (1964), Ram aur shyaam (1967), Aadmi (1968), Dastaan (1972), Bairaag (1976), Kranti (1981), Shakti (1982), Vidhaata (1982).
His last films were Saudagar (1991) and Qila (1998) which were flop.
He has done some of 60 – 65 films in his career.
He died in 07 July, 2021.
