Bharat Bhushan was born in 1920 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He started his career in films in the year 1941 with the movie Chitralekha directed by Kedar Sharma in which he was in lead actor. Bharat Bhushan became very famous with the movie Baiju Bawra, directed by Vijay Bhatt. A young singer Baiju avenges the death of his father by defeating the glorious singer Tansen, he won millions of hearts with his performance as Baijju.
With the movie Baiju Bawra, his journey to fame begun and immediately after one year he acted in the movie “Maa” with the legendary director Bimal Roy and his co-star was Leela Chitnis. Afterward, he acted with several considerable actresses of that time – Meena Kumari (Dana Pani), Nirupa Roy (Aurat Teri Yehi Kahani), Shyama (Dhoop Chhanv), Geeta Bali (Ravi), Bina Rai (Meenar) and Nutan (Shabab).
Bharat Bhushan’s next big movie was apparently Basant Bahar (1956) with Nimmi and the “Gateway of India” with Madhubala and Bharat Bhushan worked in two unforgettable movies with Madhubala, Phagun and Barsaat Ki Raat. His pair with Nirupa Roy was as well very well-liked among audiences, particularly in mythological movies. Some of the best-known movies of this pair are Shuk Rambha (1953), Samrat Chandragupta (1958), Kavi Kalidas (1959), and Rani Roopmati (1959).
In the 1960s, with his fading popularity, he started accepting character roles, although he still had few years left within him to work as the lead character. During that time, his relatives cheated Bharat Bhushan and he lost all his wealth and then Bharat Bhushan began his struggle yet again. A person, who once was among the greatest stars in the Hindi film industry had to work in the C-grade movies to earn his bread. During Bharat Bhushan’s peak time, he had a huge bungalow in the classy locality of Juhu, Bombay. The bungalow was all the time full of people and parties took place every evening. He was a great fan of classical music and he used to invite the father of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to his private parties.
During his final years, he had a very bad time. In his last movie, “Tere Payal Mere Geet”, he had to work as a junior artist, paid on everyday basis.
