Suneeta Rao, born in 5 April 1967, is among the singers of Hindi film industry who is remembered today for her work from 1980s – 1990s.
She sang a number of songs of which her song “Paree Hoon Main” from 1991 remains the most popular track.
On an interview she said:
“Earlier, even before the Indipop wave, essentially it was only Bollywood. We had opened the door for Indipop artists, we were backed by record companies and TV channels and there was this lovely marriage between us all. Then suddenly, they started making 60-second Bollywood clips and they were putting that on TV and there was absolutely no way we could compete with that. That’s how the so-called Indipop wave fizzled. But that didn’t dampen the spirit of the independent artists. Once we had set an example, others said, ‘if Suneeta Rao and Daler Mehndi can do it, why can’t I do the same?’, where it is ‘your’ face, your music, your video, and your identity coming out, without being behind the screen of the Hindi films and being a playback singer only. But today, it is possible to be everything, as long as you have your own style and originality.”
